Russia vs Australia, a size comparison.

Well in case you were wondering just how large the Russian Federation is, here's a few juxtapositions to consider.

Russia is 4.5 Australia's wide!

  1. lol, Russia is wide, but I think you'll find that you cannot compare lengths (distances) at different latitudes due to the curvature of the Earth. Russia is much further north and the latitude comes into play a LOT.

According to our good pal, wikipedia, the "widest" point from east to west Russia is about 8,000 km. Perth to Sydney distance is 3,300 km, so it's probably closer to 2.5 times wider than Australia. :-D It's still a bloody big place tho!

  2. Flat maps are extremely inaccurate at the poles. For example Greenland looks bigger than south america but it really isn't. Alaska on a flat map is the size of half USA! And Antartica is just fucking huge on a flat map!

  3. Hi,
I think you have used the wrong projection as Russia is only 2.5 times the size of Australia (roughly)

  4. Russia size is about 17 million square meters while Australia is about 7,7. So inside Russia map you can place only 2,2 Australias, so your pictures are totally wrong.
